Limestone Countertops in Riverside, CA, Soft Matte Stone, Vetted Slab by Slab
Riverside Custom Countertops fabricates and installs limestone countertops in Riverside, CA. We handle digital templating, slab layout and seam planning, undermount sink cutouts and faucet drilling, honed edge profiles, backsplash fabrication, tear-out and disposal, plus the impregnating sealer work porous stone needs before anyone cooks on it.
Limestone lands on islands, perimeter runs, powder room vanities and fireplace surrounds. Our crews work the whole city, from Canyon Crest and Mission Grove out to Arlanza, La Sierra and the bungalow streets off Magnolia Avenue, then across Riverside County on Interstate 215, State Route 60 and State Route 91.

Limestone Is a Range, Not One Stone
Start here, because it decides everything else. Porosity runs from 0.1% in the densest quarried limestone to 40% in chalk, and density spans 1.5 to 2.7 g/cm3. Two slabs sold under the same name can behave nothing alike. A tight, dense limestone is a legitimate kitchen surface. A chalky one is not, however good it looks in the yard. We read the slab in front of you and say so before you buy it.

02
What Limestone Actually Is
Limestone is calcite and aragonite, both crystal forms of calcium carbonate. Dolomite is uncommon in it, though calcite often carries a few percent magnesium. It is usually chemically fairly pure, clastic sediments running under 5 to 10% of the composition. That purity is why color reads so evenly across a slab compared with a granite full of separate minerals.
Color follows chemistry. Most limestone is white to grey, organic-rich varieties almost black, and iron or manganese traces push it off-white, then yellow, then red. Dolomitic rocks weather to a dull yellow-brown. Buyers who want quiet and uniform end up here.
03
How Limestone Performs
| Property | Verified figure | What it means on your counter |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness | Mohs 2 to 4 | Soft. It scratches, knives mark it |
| Crushing strength, dense | Up to 180 MPa | Strong, well above concrete's typical 40 MPa |
| Porosity | 0.1% to 40% | Decides kitchen suitability |
| Density | 1.5 to 2.7 g/cm3 | Heavier slabs perform better |
| Acid reaction | Vigorous with dilute hydrochloric acid | Lemon, vinegar and wine etch it |
Two lines pull opposite directions and both are true. A dense limestone reaching 180 MPa is genuinely strong stone, stronger in compression than the concrete slab your house sits on. The Mohs 2 to 4 hardness is the other half. Limestone is relatively soft. A dropped can bruises it, a dragged bowl leaves a line, and anyone cutting on the stone will see it.
04
The Honest Limits
Acid is the real one. Limestone is partially soluble, especially in acid, the chemistry that carves karst caves out of limestone country and lets acid rain eat limestone buildings. In a kitchen it shows up as etching, a dull spot where the lemon sat. Etching is not a stain. It is stone dissolved off the surface, and wiping harder does nothing.
Stains are second. The porous, fragile surface makes stain removal difficult, a polite way of saying oil that gets in does not always come out. Sealing helps. It is not a force field. Softness is third, so use cutting boards, every time.
None of that disqualifies limestone. It disqualifies limestone for the household that wants a surface it never thinks about. If that is you, we will point you at quartz countertops instead.
05
Where Limestone Works Best in a Riverside Home
Bathrooms are the easy win. A vanity deck sees water, soap and toothpaste, not citrus and red wine, so limestone's weakness barely comes up. Our bathroom vanity tops crews set limestone decks with undermount bowls in Orangecrest and Alessandro Heights regularly.
Baking counters, butler pantries, fireplace surrounds and perimeter runs suit it too, especially where a harder surface takes the sink and prep zone. Islands work when the household uses boards and trivets.
Outdoors we hesitate. Riverside is semi-arid at about 9.39 inches of precipitation a year, so acid rain is not the worry. Citrus, wine and sunscreen on soft porous stone are.
06
Finishes, Edges and Slab Options
Honed is the default and the right call. Limestone takes a matte, low-sheen finish that hides small marks better than gloss. Brushed and tumbled finishes disguise wear better again.
Limestone is readily available and relatively easy to cut into blocks, so shop fabrication is straightforward. Natural stone comes in 2cm (3/4 inch) and 3cm (1 1/4 inch), with thinner 1.2cm and 6mm formats available. On soft stone we favor 3cm, or 2cm with a built-up edge and full support underneath. Keep the profile simple: a bullnose or eased edge survives daily contact far better than a thin ogee on a Mohs 3 stone.
07
What Drives the Investment
We quote in writing after templating, never off a phone call. What moves a limestone job:
- Slab grade, density and rarity, since tight low-porosity varieties cost more
- Slab count and yield off your layout
- Thickness, 2cm versus 3cm, and whether the edge is built up
- Edge profile, since fancier edges take more machine time
- Seam count and placement
- Sink and cooktop cutouts, and whether the sink is undermount, which needs a polished edge
- Tear-out and disposal, backsplash, plumbing reconnect
- Overhang support, delivery and stair access

Limestone Compared
| Material | Hardness | Porosity and sealing | Acid behavior | Relative investment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Limestone | Mohs 2 to 4 | 0.1% to 40%, sealing required | Reacts vigorously with acid | Mid |
| Travertine | Soft carbonate | 10% to 70%, sealing required | Acid sensitive, same carbonate | Mid |
| Marble | Mohs about 3 | Porous, regular sealing essential | Corroded by acid and alcohol | Mid to premium |
| Granite | Interlocking matrix | Low primary permeability, periodic sealing | Sealing protects it | Mid to higher |
Travertine countertops are the closest twin. Travertine is fresh water limestone deposited around mineral springs, where groundwater carrying dissolved carbon dioxide loses that gas near the surface and precipitates calcium carbonate. Same chemistry, different formation. Its porosity runs roughly 10% to 70%, cold spring deposits averaging 50% and hot spring 26%, with the open pitted texture that follows. Limestone gives the quieter face and, at the dense end, porosity travertine never reaches.
Marble countertops are the other side of the family, limestone that was metamorphosed, recrystallized into an interlocking mosaic that takes veining and a high polish. It etches the same way. Veining and gloss is marble. Flat, matte and calm is limestone.
09
Care and Maintenance
The cleaning rule is short and non-negotiable: neutral or mild alkali-based cleaner, never acidic products. That rules out vinegar, lemon sprays and most lime-scale cleaners on the shelf. If a label advertises cutting through lime scale, it will cut into your counter.
Wipe spills as they happen, especially citrus, wine, coffee and oil. Blot rather than scrub. Natural stone generally gets resealed roughly once every five to ten years when oleophobic impregnators are used, but limestone's porosity range is too wide for one interval to fit, so we water-test your top and set a schedule from the result. Our countertop sealing and polishing crews handle that visit, and when a top has taken years of etching, countertop refinishing and resurfacing can hone it back rather than replace it.
10
Our Process
We template digitally with dxf files, photograph the slabs and lay your top out virtually so you see where seams and color shift fall before a saw runs. You approve the layout. We pre-machine cutouts in the shop, then deliver, set, level, seam, seal and haul the old tops away. Our countertop fabrication shop cuts in house, and where existing stone only needs attention, countertop repair costs less.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Or call us on (951) 589-3336. Calls only — we do not receive text messages.
Can limestone countertops go in a kitchen?
Dense limestone can. Chalky limestone cannot. Porosity ranges from 0.1% to 40%, and that spread decides it. We vet the slab and say when it belongs on a vanity instead of behind a range.
Will limestone etch?
Yes. Limestone is partially soluble, especially in acid, and reacts vigorously with dilute hydrochloric acid. Citrus, vinegar and wine leave dull marks. Sealing slows absorption but does not stop etching, because etching is stone dissolving, not a stain on top.
How do I clean limestone countertops?
Neutral or mild alkali-based cleaner only, never acidic products. Skip vinegar, lemon sprays and lime-scale removers, and wipe spills rather than letting them sit.
How often does limestone need sealing?
Natural stone generally gets resealed roughly once every five to ten years with oleophobic impregnators. Limestone varies too much for a fixed interval, so we water-test and set a schedule from that.
Is limestone strong enough for an island?
Structurally yes, in the dense varieties, which reach crushing strengths up to 180 MPa against concrete's typical 40 MPa. Compression strength is not scratch resistance, and at Mohs 2 to 4 the surface still needs boards.
Can scratches and etch marks be repaired?
Often yes. Honing works the surface back on a matte stone, an advantage over polished materials. Deep stains are harder, since a porous surface makes removal difficult, so tell us early.
Do you serve my ZIP code?
