What Quartzite Actually Is
Quartzite is a hard, non-foliated metamorphic rock that starts as pure quartz sandstone. Tectonic heat and pressure recrystallize the quartz grains along with the old cementing material between them, erasing the sedimentary texture and leaving a granoblastic texture of tightly interlocking grains.
That interlock is the whole story. The grains bond so tightly that a break travels through them rather than around them, giving quartzite an irregular or conchoidal fracture. The British Geological Survey sets the threshold at a minimum of 80 percent quartz by volume. Below that, it is something else wearing the name.
Pure quartzite runs white to grey. Pinks and reds come from varying hematite, other colors from trace minerals. It has served as dimension stone for walls, roofing, flooring and stairsteps for generations. Countertop use is the newest chapter, and it is expanding fast.

Quartzite Is Not Engineered Quartz
Two different products, similar names, and showrooms rarely help.
Engineered quartz countertops are manufactured: 90 to 93 percent crushed quartz by weight in 7 to 10 percent unsaturated polyester resin, vibrocompressed under vacuum and cured before polishing. The resin makes the slab non porous, so it never needs sealing, and it also makes it an indoor product, because polyester resins are not UV stable.
Quartzite is a rock. Nobody made it. No binder, no color consistency slab to slab, no factory to call. It is natural stone, which means it does need sealing. Anyone who tells you quartzite never needs sealing is describing the other material.
The Slab That Is Really Marble
A large share of what sells as quartzite is dolomitic marble, and it is far softer.
Marble countertops are carbonate, calcite or dolomite, recrystallized from limestone into an interlocking mosaic. Marble sits around 3 on the Mohs scale. It scratches, it stains from colored liquids, and acid corrodes it outright, the reaction producing soluble salts. Vinegar and most descalers dull it permanently.
So acid tells the truth. A calcite or dolomite stone reacts to a drop of dilute acid on a hidden edge, fizzing, clouding or dulling. Nearly pure silica does not care. We run that check, plus a scratch test on the offcut, before fabrication. Marble makes a beautiful counter for the right buyer. It just is not quartzite, and should not be priced or maintained as if it were.

How Quartzite Performs
Harder than granite, and more stain resistant than granite, which already tests as the second most stain resistant common countertop surface per Consumer Reports. That combination sells the stone once a buyer touches it.
Chemical resistance is the other advantage. The stone is essentially silica, so the acids that etch calcite counters do not attack it. Citrus on a quartzite island is a wipe, not a repair. It carries no polyester resin either, so the UV limit that keeps engineered slabs indoors does not apply, which matters in a city averaging 79.8 degrees in August.
Honest Limits
Every material has limits, and quartzite has four worth saying out loud.
It needs sealing. Bare natural stone harbors bacteria and fluids, and an oleophobic impregnating sealer holds roughly five to ten years before renewal.
It is hard to fabricate. The grain structure that resists your knives resists our blades, so cutting runs slower and tooling wears faster than on granite.
It chips like glass at an unsupported edge. Conchoidal fracture is an asset in the field of the slab and a liability at a thin overhang corner.
And the naming problem is not going away. Slabs get mislabeled at the quarry, the distributor and the showroom. Verify, or you are buying a story.

Where Quartzite Works in a Riverside Home
Kitchen perimeters and islands first, where hardness and stain resistance pay for themselves. Waterfall ends carry the veining across three planes.
Bathrooms are the easy win. A vanity top takes cosmetics and toothpaste without the anxiety a marble top brings, and a full-height backsplash off the same slab kills the grout line behind the range.
Outdoor kitchens are where quartzite separates from engineered stone. Silica Dust and Shop Safety
Quartzite is mostly silica, and cutting quartz rich stone releases respirable dust. California recorded 500 silicosis cases among fabrication workers as of January 2026, with 72 percent of shops out of compliance with federal silica dust standards, and approved emergency regulations in December 2023.
The controls are known: wet cutting, local exhaust ventilation, respiratory protection on every operator. Ask any fabricator how they cut. A vague answer is an answer.

What Drives the Investment
We quote in writing after templating, because two kitchens with the same square footage can be very different jobs. What moves the number:

- Slab count and yield, since a strong vein match usually costs a slab
- Thickness, 2cm versus 3cm
- Edge profile, and the labor it takes in a hard stone
- Seam count and placement
- Sink, cooktop and faucet cutouts

- Overhang brackets or corbels
- Delivery access, stairs and tight interior turns

Caring for Quartzite
Short list. Neutral pH cleaner, warm water, soft cloth. No acidic descalers, no abrasive powders.
Reseal on roughly a five to ten year cycle with an oleophobic impregnator, sooner in a heavy prep kitchen or a sun exposed outdoor run. Test it yourself: water drops near the sink, fifteen minutes, wipe. Darkened stone means the sealer is spent. Use a cutting board anyway, because your knives will lose.

Is quartzite the same as quartz?
No. Quartzite is natural rock, at least 80 percent quartz by volume. Engineered quartz is a manufactured slab of crushed quartz in polyester resin. Quartzite needs sealing, engineered quartz never does.
How can I tell if a slab is real quartzite and not marble?
Acid and a scratch test on a hidden edge. Marble is calcite or dolomite at about Mohs 3, so it reacts to acid and scratches easily. Quartzite is nearly pure silica and harder than granite.
Does quartzite need to be sealed?
Yes, it is natural stone. An oleophobic impregnating sealer holds roughly five to ten years, less in heavy use.
