What a Porcelain Slab Actually Is

Porcelain starts as a recipe, not a quarry. Kaolin and ball clay make up 40 to 50 percent of the body, feldspar 35 to 45 percent, quartz 10 to 15 percent, metallic oxides under 5 percent.

That blend is wet milled, spray-dry granulated, dust-pressed and fired at about 1,200C. In the kiln the feldspar phase-changes into a liquid glass that pulls into the microscopic pores by capillary action. What cools out is monolithic, chemically inert and frost resistant, with essentially no internal porosity and greater density than conventional ceramic.

How Porcelain Performs

Water Absorption Under 0.5 Percent

This is the number that defines the material. A porcelain body absorbs less than 0.5 percent water, per ISO 13006 and BS EN 14411, with ANSI using the same threshold. Below the line it is porcelain. Above it, it is another ceramic body wearing the same word.

Hardness, Heat and Acids

Porcelain is significantly harder and more abrasion resistant than other ceramic tiles, and wear is graded 0 to 5 under ISO 10545-7 and ASTM C1027, so ask for the rating on your product. The slab already survived about 1,200C, so heat is not the threat thermal shock is on a resin surface, and an inert body gives citrus, wine and vinegar nothing to attack. No open porosity means nothing to seal.

Outdoors, Where Porcelain Beats Quartz

This is the honest separation between the two. Engineered quartz countertops are bound by unsaturated polyester resin, and polyester resin is not UV stable, so quartz cannot go outside. Porcelain has no binder to degrade. It is a fired inorganic slab, frost resistant by composition, which is why it works on grill surrounds and covered patios. Honest Limits of a Porcelain Countertop

Porcelain slabs are thin. That is the point for weight and format, and it is also the weakness: edges, corners and cutout perimeters chip if struck or handled carelessly. A full slab is vulnerable in transit and during set, so it demands skilled fabrication and enough hands.

One more thing to ask about. On many porcelain slabs the pattern is a surface layer rather than running through the body. That is standard trade practice, not a published spec, and it matters because a deep chip may not hide.

Porcelain or Ceramic Tile
