Granite and Natural Stone: Honing and Re-Polishing

Granite is an interlocking matrix of quartz, alkali feldspar, mica and plagioclase, density 2.65 to 2.75 g/cm3 and compressive strength above 200 MPa. That hardness is why it takes a diamond re-polish so well. We run a grit sequence with water-fed pads and blend dull traffic zones into the field. Granite has poor primary permeability but real secondary permeability through cracks, so hairlines get addressed first.

Marble and Limestone: Removing Etch Marks

An etch is not a stain. Lemon, wine and vinegar dissolve calcite on contact, and marble sits near 3 on the Mohs scale, so the damage is lost surface. No cleaner reverses it. Honing does, by abrading the plane past the etch before the finish comes back up. In a working kitchen a honed finish often beats a mirror polish. Limestone and travertine are softer still.

Butcher Block and Wood: Sanding and Re-Oiling

Wood is the most renewable top in the catalog. Joined planks or a single wide stave, either sands flat and takes fresh oil, and repeats for decades. Research found wooden surfaces no more dangerous than plastic, since bacteria are absorbed but do not multiply. Wood still needs disinfecting after raw meat.

Solid Surface: Sanding Out Scratches

Solid surface is acrylic or polyester, about 12mm thick, with edges built from two or three stacked layers. Its glued joints sand to almost no visible trace, and the same principle restores the open field: color runs through the sheet, so removing material removes the damage. Impact resistance is lower than stainless or cast iron, and the sheet moves at temperature extremes.

Laminate: Resurfacing Over a Sound Deck

High-pressure laminate is kraft paper, decorative papers and melamine resins bonded under heat and pressure, .030 to .040 inch thick, over 45# particle board or plywood. Nothing to sand. Resurfacing bonds a new decorative layer with PVA water-based adhesive, which has largely replaced solvent contact cement. Delamination or knife scarring that cannot be disinfected means replacement.

Concrete: Refreshing a Cast Surface

Engineered Quartz: The Honest Limit

Engineered quartz is 90 to 93 percent crushed quartz in 7 to 10 percent unsaturated polyester resin, pressed by the Breton vibrocompression vacuum process and cured 24 to 48 hours before a calibrated line polishes it. It rates about 7 on the Mohs scale against marble's 3. Harder, yes. Easier to refinish, no. Stone and resin abrade at different rates, and field polishing usually leaves a cloudy patch that reads worse than the dullness you started with. So quartz work stays narrow: spot scratch reduction, chip and seam repair, haze cleanup. Thermal shock cracks and UV discoloration route to repair or replacement.
