Signs Your Countertop Is Past Repair
Repair buys time. These six failures do not respond to it.
Laminate delamination. Once the sheet lifts off the particle board or MDF substrate, the bond is gone. Re-gluing a lifted edge near a sink fails again fast, since the core has already swelled.
Knife scarring that cannot be disinfected. Heavy knife scarring in laminate cannot be sanitized. That is a food-safety problem, not a cosmetic one. Wood differs, since bacteria are absorbed into the grain but do not multiply, so scarred butcher block is usually refinishable.
Deep staining in unsealed stone. Natural stone has poor primary permeability but strong secondary permeability through cracks. Once sealing lapses past the five to ten year window an oleophobic impregnator buys you, oil and acid run down the fissures where honing cannot reach.
Cracked seams. A seam that has opened and moved says the substrate or the cabinet run underneath has shifted. Refilling it treats the symptom.
Impact damage in solid surface. Solid surface has lower impact resistance than stainless or cast iron and moves at temperature extremes. Small chips sand out. A spidered area under a dropped pot does not sand out.
Thermal cracking in quartz. Engineered quartz resists heat below roughly 150 degrees Celsius but cracks under sudden temperature change. A crack crossing a cooktop cutout is a replacement.

Tear-Out and Disposal
Old tops come off in planned pieces, not with a pry bar. Stone gets cut down before lifting, because a 3cm slab section is heavy through a galley or down a stair. We shut off water, isolate the cooktop circuit, and score the caulk and adhesive lines so drywall paper stays put. Debris leaves the same day, and disposal is a real line on your quote, since stone, substrate and old sinks go to different places.

Protecting Your Cabinets During Removal
Most damage in a swap happens in the first hour. We tape and pad cabinet faces, cover the flooring on the path out, and back sink clips and screws out by hand instead of shearing them. Where the old top is glued to the rails, we cut the adhesive line instead of lifting the rail out with it.

Can Your Cabinets Carry a Stone Slab?
This is the question that gets skipped. Granite runs 2.65 to 2.75 grams per cubic centimeter, and slabs come in 2cm and 3cm. Before templating we check that boxes are level, rails are sound, and the run sits at the standard 35 to 36 inches off the floor with a proper toe kick. Older kitchens in Northside and Casa Blanca often need shims or a plywood deck, and overhangs need corbel or steel support.

Plumbing, Cooktop and Sink Reconnect
Faucets, disposals, dishwasher air gaps, drop-in ranges and cooktops come off before removal and go back after the new top is set and the silicone cures. Undermount sinks need a finished edge and a silicone bed. Drop-ins clamp from below against sealant. Stainless integrated sinks arrive welded and ground into the top. Template to Install Timeline
Digital templating produces dxf files, and slab photography lets you approve a multi-slab layout before a saw runs. Sink and cooktop details are pre-machined in the shop. Most stone jobs follow one rhythm: measure and quote, tear-out and template, fabrication, then install and reconnect. Solid surface is built in the shop and assembled on site with glued, sanded joints. Cast-in-place concrete needs cure time, and laminate turns around fastest.

Matching the New Top to Your Backsplash and Flooring
If the tile backsplash is staying, edge thickness matters. Going from a post-formed laminate top with a coved upstand to a flat 3cm stone edge leaves a gap where the cove was, so we plan a matching band or a tile course. An applied backsplash keeps spills out from behind the cabinets, so keep it. We also check the slab against your floor in daylight, because travertine and cool gray quartz can fight under LED light.
