What Travertine Actually Is

Travertine is a form of fresh water limestone deposited around mineral springs, especially hot springs. Chemically it is calcium carbonate, and that one fact governs everything below.

It forms by chemical precipitation. Groundwater carrying dissolved carbon dioxide meets limestone and dissolves it, then loses that carbon dioxide near the surface and drops calcium carbonate back out as stone. Meteogenic travertine comes from soil and organic carbon dioxide, the process that builds speleothems in caves. Thermogenic travertine comes from volcanic carbon dioxide in hot springs, as at Pamukkale and Mammoth Hot Springs. The Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, the Getty Center and the Willis Tower are all built from it.

Porosity Is the Entire Conversation

The voids are what buyers fall for. They are also the liability.

Porosity runs from about 10 percent to 70 percent. Cold spring travertine averages around 50 percent, hot spring deposits about 26 percent. That spread is why one slab behaves nothing like another, and why we quote off the slab and not a chip. Travertine typically lacks planes of weakness, so it does not split along a grain, and its high porosity makes it light in weight for its strength.

Filled Versus Unfilled

Unfilled leaves the natural holes open. Rustic, and it collects crumbs, grease and standing water in every void.

Filled travertine has those holes packed at the plant and surfaced flat. That is the right call on nearly every countertop. Filler is not stone, though, and over years of scrubbing individual fills shrink, discolor or pop out. Refilling is maintenance, not a defect.

Honed Versus Polished

Honed is our default. It stops the diamond grit sequence short of gloss, leaving a matte that hides etch marks and water spotting. Polished travertine looks superb on day one, then shows every dull spot the moment acid touches it.

The Acid Problem, Stated Plainly

Travertine is calcium carbonate. So is marble. So is limestone. All three are acid sensitive the same way, and sealer does not fully solve it.

Acid does not stain these stones, it dissolves them. Lemon, vinegar, wine and most bathroom descalers strip a thin layer of surface, leaving a dull etch that gets refinished, not wiped away. Use a neutral or mild alkali-based cleaner, never an acidic one.

Honest Limits

It is soft next to granite or engineered quartz, so it scratches and dents at an edge that takes a knock. It absorbs, so oil and wine soak into an under-sealed top fast. It etches. Fill fails and voids reopen. And it needs sealing more attentively than granite, because granite's body is nearly impermeable and travertine's is not.

We will not put travertine on a hard-use kitchen island for a family that cooks acidic food nightly. That buyer wants quartzite countertops or granite countertops.

Where Travertine Earns Its Place in a Riverside Home

Vanities and powder rooms are its best rooms. Water, soap, low acid exposure, warm color. Our bathroom vanity top installation crews set more travertine than any other calcite stone. Backsplashes work too, since a vertical surface takes no cutting and no hot pans.

Outdoor bars and BBQ surrounds are the other strong case, because travertine holds up in sun where engineered stone cannot. Polyester resin is not UV stable. Riverside is semi-arid, 54.8°F in December to 79.8°F in August on about 9.39 inches of rain a year, so a covered patio in Orangecrest is friendly territory. Colors, Slabs and Edges

Travertine runs white, tan, cream and rusty, with brown to yellow tones from mineral impurities in the spring water. It is a warm stone and will not read cool grey. We stock slab for continuous tops, and tile set in mortar and grouted for backsplash work. Standard thicknesses are 2cm and 3cm, with 1.2cm for laminated build-ups. Eased, bullnose and rounded edges outlast a thin ogee, because a carved edge in porous calcium carbonate chips.

Limestone countertops are travertine's parent rock and closest twin. The difference is formation. Limestone is the broader sedimentary stone, denser and more uniform in face. Travertine is the spring deposit, banded, full of gas voids, warmer. Marble countertops sit above both on price and etch identically.

Care and Maintenance

Seal it, then keep sealing it. We use oleophobic impregnating sealers, which carry solids into the pore network and cure inside the stone instead of coating the top. On most natural stone that holds roughly five to ten years. On travertine, plan the short end, shorter still outdoors in full sun.

Test it twice a year. Water drops and cooking oil drops, fifteen minutes, then wipe. Darkening means the sealer is spent, and oil defeats a weak sealer long before water does.

Blot spills, do not drag them. When etches or reopened voids show, our countertop sealing and polishing team regrinds, refills and reseals in place. Deeper chips go to countertop repair, and a tired top often comes back through refinishing and resurfacing rather than replacement.

Our Process

Free measure and slab walk first. We template digitally with dxf files, photograph the slab and lay your top out virtually so you approve void placement before the saw runs. Sink and cooktop details are pre-machined, and cutouts on a porous edge are sealed before the sink is set. Install day covers set, seam, level, silicone and a first seal. Do travertine countertops need to be sealed?

Yes, and more attentively than granite. Porosity runs from about 10 to 70 percent, so it drinks liquid. We use an oleophobic impregnating sealer and plan renewal on the short end of the five to ten year window.

Will travertine etch like marble?

Yes. Travertine, marble and limestone are all calcium carbonate, so acid dissolves a thin layer of surface rather than staining it. A honed finish hides etching far better than a polished one.

Filled or unfilled travertine for a countertop?

Filled, in almost every case. Open voids trap crumbs, grease and standing water. Unfilled belongs on vertical cladding, not a work surface.

Can travertine go on a kitchen island?
