Vanity Depth Is Not Kitchen Depth
This is where online slab estimates go wrong. The U.S. kitchen standard runs 25 to 26 inches deep front to back (640 to 660mm) and sits 35 to 36 inches off the floor (890 to 910mm). Vanity cabinets are usually shallower, and heights vary, since comfort-height and traditional cabinets both show up on the same Orangecrest street. We measure your actual cabinet, because a top ordered to kitchen dimensions overhangs the drawer fronts and fouls the wall.
Thickness matters too. Natural stone comes in 2cm (3/4 inch) and 3cm (1 1/4 inch), with thinner 1.2cm and 6mm formats available, while engineered stone is standard at 12mm, 20mm and 30mm. A 2cm top with a built-up edge reads as thick as 3cm at the front.
Single Bowl or Double Bowl
Doubles look obvious on paper and get tight in practice. Two bowls need drain spacing, elbow room between faucets, and enough deck left over for anything to sit on. On a narrow cabinet, one large bowl with a wide deck usually serves a couple better than two cramped ones. Doubles also change the fabrication: two cutouts, two faucet sets, more weight. We lay both out on your real cabinet width first.

Sink Choice: Undermount, Drop-In or Integrated
The sink drives the fabrication, so we settle it first.
Undermount sinks mount below the deck and require a finished, polished cutout edge, because that edge stays visible. The sink is silicone sealed and clipped from underneath. It costs more than a drop-in, gives the contemporary look most Riverside remodels want, and lets you wipe water into the bowl.
Drop-in, also called self-rimming, sets into the opening with the rim suspended on the deck, clamped from below and sealed. The cutout edge needs no finishing, which keeps fabrication simpler, but the rim collects film.
Integrated bowls are formed from the same material as the top. Cultured marble tops are cast with the bowl in place, so there is no seam. Solid surface bowls are glued and sanded until the joint disappears.

Backsplash and Side Splash
A backsplash keeps water from running behind the cabinet and swelling the wall, the failure we see most in bathrooms with heavy morning use. A short integrated or applied splash in the same material is the standard, and cultured marble tops can be cast with the splash attached. Where the vanity meets a side wall, a side splash closes the gap that soaks the drywall corner. Some homeowners skip both and run tile above the deck. That works, as long as the joint at the deck stays sealed.

Engineered quartz is 90 to 93 percent crushed quartz by weight bound in 7 to 10 percent unsaturated polyester resin, vibrocompacted under vacuum. Non-porous, never sealed. Granite runs 2.65 to 2.75 g/cm3 with compressive strength usually above 200 MPa, though it wants periodic sealing against acid damage. Solid surface is roughly 12mm acrylic or polyester, with edges built up in stacked layers and glued joints sanded to almost no visible trace.

Cultured marble is not natural stone and not a quartz surface. It is high-strength polyester resin cast with real marble stone dust, and it tests about four times stronger than natural stone such as granite or marble, for significantly less than natural marble. The product exists because of bathrooms: vanity tops, shower pans, window sills and whirlpool decks are its whole world. What keeps it popular here is the integral bowl. One casting, no sink seam, no caulk line, no clips.

Humidity, Sealing and Maintenance
Riverside is semi-arid, averaging 79.8°F in August, 54.8°F in December, and about 9.39 inches of rain a year. The bathroom does not care. Behind a closed door with the shower running, that room is the wettest place in the house, and standing water sits on a vanity deck longer than it ever does on a kitchen counter.
That changes the material math. Natural stone needs sealing to keep from harboring bacteria and fluids, roughly once every five to ten years when oleophobic impregnators are used, with a hard-use family bath earning the shorter end of that window. Replacing a Vanity Top Without Replacing the Cabinet
You usually do not need a new cabinet. If the box is square, the doors close and the frame is not water-damaged at the toe kick, we template over what is there and set a new top on it. The plumbing rough-in, the flooring and the wall paint stay untouched. Older tops fastened with construction adhesive sometimes take drywall with them, so we plan for a patch at the splash line. If the cabinet is soft or racked, we say so before you spend money on a top that sits on a failing box.

How long does a vanity top installation take?
Templating takes under an hour. Fabrication runs several days depending on material and slab availability. Install day for a single vanity is usually a few hours, with the plumbing disconnect and reconnect scheduled around it.
Can I keep my existing vanity cabinet?
Almost always. If the box is square and not water-damaged at the base, we template over it and set a new top. That is the most common vanity job we do in Riverside.
