A sealer soaks in and blocks liquid from entering the pore structure. Polishing abrades the surface with finer and finer diamond grit until light reflects evenly. A slab can be sealed and still look dull, or look glossy and still drink red wine like a sponge. So we test before we quote.

Why Natural Stone Needs Sealing

Granite is an interlocking matrix of quartz, alkali feldspar, mica and plagioclase, density around 2.65 to 2.75 g/cm3, compressive strength usually above 200 MPa. Hard rock. Its primary permeability is poor, so the body of the stone does not pass fluid easily. Its secondary permeability is strong, because fluid travels through cracks and micro-fissures instead.

Liquid does not go through the stone, it goes around it, down the fine seams every natural slab has. Unsealed stone harbors bacteria and fluids in those pathways. Sealing also guards against acid damage from citrus, vinegar and wine.

The Water Drop Test You Can Run Tonight

Put a few drops of water near the sink and the cooktop, where wear is heaviest. Wait fifteen minutes, wipe.

Darkened stone means the sealer is spent. Beading with no color change means you are protected. Repeat with cooking oil, which defeats a weak sealer long before water does. Sealer wears unevenly, so test several spots; the strip in front of the sink fails first.

Polished runs the grit sequence to a high gloss. It deepens color and shows water spots and fingerprints. Honed stops earlier, a flat matte with no mirror. It hides etching and scratches, the usual call on marble and limestone. Leathered adds texture, a rippled matte with grip that disguises crumbs and smudges. It suits soapstone, slate and darker granite.

We can take a top from polished to honed or leathered in place. Going back to full polish on stone that was never factory polished is harder, and we say so up front.

Etch Removal on Calcite Stones

Marble, travertine, limestone and onyx are calcite based. Acid does not stain them, it dissolves them. A lemon slice left overnight leaves a dull ring no cleaner will fix. The shine is physically gone.

Etch removal is refinishing. We regrind the area, blend it into the surrounding field, then reseal. Marble sits near 3 on the Mohs scale against roughly 7 for engineered quartz, which is why it marks easily and why honed is often the smarter call in a working kitchen.

Dry air helps the stone and hurts the sealer. Spills evaporate instead of sitting, which cuts stain risk, but constant wiping abrades sealer out of the top layer of pores. Hard water is the other factor. Mineral-heavy tap water leaves scale around faucets and undermount sink rims, and homeowners fight it with acidic descalers that etch calcite stone and strip sealer at once.
