What Granite Actually Is
Granite is an igneous rock. Magma cooled slowly underground, slowly enough for the minerals to grow into crystals you can see: quartz, alkali feldspar, mica and plagioclase, grown together into an interlocking matrix.
Nothing glues granite together. No resin, no cement, no binder that can yellow. The crystals grip each other, and the color is mineral rather than pigment or print. Two slabs off one block will differ, which is why we photograph the real stone first.

Read the stain line twice. Consumer Reports put one common surface ahead of granite, and that is engineered quartz.

The Honest Limits
Every surface has them. Here are granite's.
It needs sealing. Periodic sealing is what protects granite against acid damage, and unsealed natural stone can harbor bacteria and fluids.
Its weakness is cracks, not the face. Primary permeability is poor, so sound slab resists soaking. Secondary permeability through cracks is strong, and a fissure is where wine and oil get in.
Fire is the failure mode. Above 1000 degrees Celsius granite micro-fractures and loses strength, so edges stay clear of open flame.
Seams show. We hide them in low light and low traffic, but a granite seam never vanishes the way a solid surface joint does. And the slab you buy is the slab you get, not the sample chip.

The Radon Question, Answered Calmly
Homeowners ask, so here is the straight answer. Granite is rock, and some of it carries uranium, roughly 10 to 20 parts per million in the stones that do. About 5 percent of granite falls in the category worth a look. Testing has been done: in a study of 39 full-size slabs, every one measured well below European Union safety standards. Where Granite Works Best in a Riverside Home
Kitchen perimeters and islands are the obvious fit, on runs 25 to 26 inches deep with the top 35 to 36 inches off the floor, toe kick and a slight overhang. Bathrooms are the quiet win, since vanity tops take cosmetics, cleaners and standing water daily and sealed granite ignores all three.
Outdoors is where granite pulls away. It is UV stable, so sun does not touch it, while engineered quartz is bound in unsaturated polyester resin that is not UV stable and does not belong on a patio. Finishes, Edges, Thickness and Slab Options
Slab stock runs 2cm, 3cm and 4cm, with thinner 1.2cm and 6mm material used elsewhere. Most Riverside kitchens land on 3cm, which spans more unsupported width and carries a heavier edge.

Two honest notes. Quartz countertops for Riverside kitchens beat granite on stain resistance and never need sealing, so if you hate maintenance and stay indoors, quartz is the better buy. What Drives the Investment
We quote in writing after a site visit and publish no numbers, because a real granite figure depends on your slab and your room. What moves it: slab grade and rarity, how many slabs the layout consumes and the yield off each, thickness, edge profile, seam count, cutouts, tear-out and disposal, backsplash, plumbing reconnect, overhang support and delivery access. A narrow gate or a flight of stairs changes the crew.

Care and Sealing Schedule
Daily care is nothing special. Warm water, mild soap, and wipe up citrus, wine and oil rather than letting them sit.
Sealing has a schedule. With an oleophobic impregnator, most natural stone holds roughly five to ten years, and hard-cooking kitchens, full-sun tops and older stone land at the short end. Run the bead test: if water stops beading, book a reseal. That is countertop sealing and polishing, and chips or failed seams go through granite countertop repair.

How often do granite countertops need sealing?
Roughly every five to ten years with an oleophobic impregnator. Heavy-use kitchens and full-sun tops need it sooner. If water stops beading, it is time.
Is granite or quartz better for a Riverside kitchen?
