What Engineered Quartz Actually Is
The slab is 90 to 93 percent crushed quartz by weight, held in 7 to 10 percent unsaturated polyester resin with a peroxide catalyst and a cobalt accelerator. That mix runs through the Breton vibrocompression vacuum process, which compacts it under vacuum to drive out the air, then cures 24 to 48 hours before polishing.
Two results matter to you. The slab is isotropic, so it behaves the same in every direction, with none of the bedding planes or soft mineral seams natural stone carries. And it has virtually no porosity. Nothing soaks in.
A third shows up in the slab yard. Color and pattern run uniform slab to slab, so a section added two years from now still matches. Buy granite countertops and you are buying the one slab in front of you.

How Quartz Performs in a Working Kitchen
Hardness and scratching
Quartz sits at about 7 on the Mohs scale. Marble sits at about 3. That gap is why a marble island shows knife tracks inside a year and a quartz island does not. Use a board anyway, for the knives.
Stains and sealing
Virtually no porosity means no sealer, ever. Natural stone needs sealing so bacteria and spilled fluids cannot lodge in the surface, roughly once every five to ten years with oleophobic impregnators. Quartz deletes that line from your calendar. Among common household surfaces it is the most resistant to discoloration from foods and household products. Granite ranks second per Consumer Reports, and still needs periodic sealing against acid damage.
Heat, and the mistake we see most
Quartz resists heat below 150°C, roughly 300°F. The number is not the real risk. Sudden temperature change is, and a pan lifted straight off a burner onto a cool slab can crack it. Thermal shock is the most common quartz damage we get called out for. Trivets are not optional.

Quartz Is Not Quartzite
Buyers confuse these two weekly, and the names earn it. They are different products.
Quartz is engineered. Crushed mineral plus polyester resin, pressed and cured in a factory, non-porous, sealed never, patterned predictably.
Quartzite is natural metamorphic rock, a quartz sandstone recrystallized by heat and pressure. The British Geological Survey threshold is at least 80 percent quartz by volume. Its grains interlock so tightly that a break fractures through the grains rather than around them, which is why it is harder and more stain resistant than granite. The Honest Limits of Quartz
Four of them change decisions.
It cannot go outdoors. Polyester resins are not completely UV stable, so engineered stone discolors in sustained sun. In a city averaging 79.8°F in August, that rules out patios and uncovered islands. Those get a different surface, covered on our outdoor kitchen countertops page.
Thermal shock cracks it. That is the trade you accept for a resin binder.
Long runs need seams. The common quartz slab format is 3040 by 1440 mm, so a longer counter gets a seam, and on a dark uniform color that seam shows more than on busy natural stone. We place seams at templating, not at install.
It looks manufactured, because it is. Uniform pattern is a feature when you want consistency and a drawback when you want geology. For character, look at soapstone countertops or concrete countertops.

Where Quartz Works Best in Riverside
Interior kitchen perimeters and islands are the core use, and quartz is the surface we set most often across the 92501 through 92509 ZIP codes. A 20mm top with a built-up edge reads as thick as 30mm at the front and saves weight on a long run. Edge profiles go from a router-trimmed self edge to bullnose and ogee, and the fancier the profile, the more shop time it takes. Undermount sinks need a polished cutout edge, so pick the sink before we machine anything.

Porcelain is the one to weigh if you want quartz-like maintenance outdoors: absorption under 0.5 percent per ISO 13006 and BS EN 14411, and frost resistant. Caring for Quartz
Soap, water, a soft cloth. No sealer, no impregnator, no annual service call. Blot acidic spills out of habit, keep a trivet near the range, chop on a board. Chips at an edge or sink cutout are the usual damage, and we look at those in person before promising a result.

Fabrication Safety, and Why It Belongs in Your Questions
Cutting engineered quartz generates respirable silica dust, and breathing it causes silicosis. That is a shop-floor hazard, not a hazard from the cured slab in your kitchen. It is also current and real here: 500 silicosis cases documented among California fabrication workers as of January 2026, with 72 percent of shops out of compliance with federal silica dust standards. California approved emergency regulations in December 2023, and Australia banned engineered stone outright effective July 1, 2024.
The controls are established. Wet cutting so dust never goes airborne, local exhaust ventilation at the machines, respiratory protection on the operators. Ask any fabricator how they cut quartz. Riverside Custom Countertops is licensed and insured, and we will walk you through our shop.

We template digitally, produce dxf files and slab photography, and lay your top out virtually so you approve the layout and seam placement before a saw runs. Multi-slab layouts go out for inspection when a job needs more than one. Sink and cooktop details are pre-machined on shop CNC equipment, so site time stays short and dust stays out of your house. Then we deliver, set, level, silicone the joints and coordinate the plumbing reconnect.
