Two ingredients. Glass, and something holding it together.

The glass is float glass, the flat glass used in windows, either post-consumer (used, then diverted from the waste stream) or post-industrial (factory offcut that never reached a buyer). It is crushed into aggregate or cut into strips, then heated to its softening point so the pieces round and fuse instead of sitting in the slab as shards.

Then it gets bound, with concrete or with polyester resin. That choice is the entire buying decision.

Concrete-Bound Glass Behaves Like Concrete

A concrete binder is mineral. It gains strength through hydration as it cures and keeps some porosity, so the top is porous. It gets sealed, then resealed on a schedule, like any concrete top.

It arrives the three ways concrete tops do: cast in place over forms on your cabinets, custom precast from site templates, or gauged slabs machined like stone. Resin-Bound Glass Behaves Like Engineered Stone

A polyester resin binder puts the slab in the engineered stone family. Engineered quartz runs 90 to 93 percent crushed quartz by weight in 7 to 10 percent unsaturated polyester resin, with a peroxide catalyst and cobalt accelerator. Swap the aggregate for glass and the binder story is the same.

It inherits the good part, non-porous and never sealed, and both limits. Polyester resins are not UV stable, so this top stays indoors, out of sun that averages 79.8 degrees in August. What the Glass Itself Brings

Glass is non-porous, relatively stain-proof, extremely hygienic and heat resistant up to 700 degrees. That is the aggregate, not the finished top. The binder sets the real limit, and no polyester resin comes near 700 degrees.

Crafted glass tops are a different product: single sheets, tempered, textured, or finished as verre eglomise. Same non-porous, hygienic, heat resistant profile, but a solid sheet rather than aggregate, so they read as clean color instead of terrazzo.

The Honest Limits

Chips expose the aggregate. Edges and cutout corners take the hits. A chip in stone shows more stone. A chip here shows the cut cross section of glass and binder, catching light differently than the polished face. Fills work. They do not vanish.

Seams show. The pattern cannot line up across a seam, since there is no vein to follow. We place seams where cabinetry hides them, and tell you where before we cut.

The look is loud. Next to patterned tile it fights the room.

Resin-bound tops carry the UV and thermal shock limits. Indoors only, trivets always.

Concrete-bound tops carry sealing and crazing. Fine hairline crazing on a cast surface is normal for a mineral binder. Some owners like it. Some are upset on day thirty.

The Sustainability Case, Without the Overstatement

Float glass that would have been waste ends up in a countertop instead. Genuine diversion, and a fair reason to buy.

It is also the whole claim we make. We do not quote a recycled content percentage, since it varies by product line and we will not put a number in writing we cannot verify. Ask your supplier on paper. If environmental impact ranks first for you, wood is renewable and the most eco-friendly surface on the market, which is where butcher block counters come in.

Samples go home with you first, since this material misleads in a showroom. We template digitally with dxf files, lay out the slab, and confirm seam placement before cutting. Cutouts and edge work are pre-machined in the shop with routers, grinders and CNC. Install day is tear-out, set, level, seam, silicone. Cast-in-place work runs longer, because the pour and cure happen on site.
